Culinary Medicine Outreach Assistant (MPH Practicum/APE)

The Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University is the United States
premier interdisciplinary program bridging culinary arts, nutrition and medicine. The
teaching kitchen, a part of Tulane’s School of Medicine, teaches medical students about
food and nutrition through hands-on cooking classes. Students learn how to cook, what
to eat, and how to help patients improve their diet and therefore their health. Free
cooking classes are also offered for adults, families, and children in the community.
The culinary medicine outreach assistant will be integral to the many aspects of the
kitchen’s programming including class logistics, kitchen operations, recipe testing and
recipe development, leadership and training for volunteers, and teaching nutrition and
cooking concepts and skills to diverse audiences. Students will also be tasked with
developing relevant nutrition education content for distribution online through
newsletters and social media. They will gain valuable experience in nutrition, public
health, education, and community outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Assist in delivering nutrition focused, hands-on cooking classes for the local
community, medical students, and/or medical professionals
• Assist in operational tasks including organizing and preparing for community classes
and events at the teaching kitchen
• Test existing recipes to ensure that the finished product meets taste, appearance,
cost, and nutrition specifications and that the directions can be easily followed by
class participants
• Develop and edit nutrition education content for the public through in-class
handouts, PowerPoint content, online newsletters and social media posts
• Organize, plan, and lead community outreach programs such as health fairs, cooking
demonstrations, and other special events (as needed/schedule permitting)
• Assist with community class recruitment and retention efforts
• Collaborate with other nonprofit and community partners, such as the on-site
community garden, to execute special projects
• Additional opportunities to compile research and work on curriculum projects may
be available, pending GCCM’s class schedule
Qualifications and Skills
Qualifications include:
• Currently pursuing a Master of Public Health degree at Tulane University. MPH Nutrition students are preferred.
• Interest in community nutrition and outreach
• Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple ongoing projects and deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Self-directed and motivated
• Able to quickly adapt to changing environments
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
Requirements
• A laptop that is able to access internet and run Microsoft office programs
• A car is not required, but is strongly recommended, students must be able to arrange
transportation to GCCM for scheduled shifts
Schedule/Working Conditions
GCCM is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm but we teach classes for the community in the
evenings and on weekends. Shifts will vary depending on the GCCM class schedule and the
student’s availability. A portion of the student’s required hours may be completed as
remote, project-based work.

We are located in the ReFresh Project building in Mid-city which also houses Whole Foods,
Liberty’s Kitchen, Boy’s Town, First Line Schools, and SPROUT NOLA.
Physical Requirements
The culinary medicine outreach assistant should expect to be on their feet for most of the
time they are in the kitchen. They should be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
