Imagine this: You get a push notification on your phone the minute your dream employer posts a new position.
If you’ve taken an introductory finance course, you’ve likely learned that there are passive and active investments. Well, the same goes for your career strategy! Of course, actively engaging in your career strategy is a must, but what many students might not think about enough is how to passively get your career resources to work for you.
With minimal effort, you can set yourself up to receive relevant career information, including employer event details, relevant industry data, and the latest jobs newly posted to the market.
And in the job search world where many applications are rolling (i.e., the employer will be evaluating candidates as received, as opposed to evaluating applications after a hard deadline), being early to apply can be the difference in getting an interview and missing the boat.
So, how can you passively invest in your future career?
- Complete your profile fully. When you create your profile on career platforms like Handshake, be sure to give ample detail about your experience, interests, and career goals to help platform direct more relevant content to you.
- Follow your top employers AND their job posting. By following employers, you’ll be alerted to their latest events, news and job postings. Even if you just follow the top employers on your LAMP list (link), that’s still more news than you would have gotten if you hadn’t followed anyone!
- Turn on your notifications. Whether you’re searching on Handshake, LinkedIn, or any other job platform, be sure to set up your notifications so you get alerts not just within the app but as a push notification and/or as an email.
Just like most everything else in the world of finance, diversifying your strategy is essential to success. So, do yourself a favor and, instead of constantly checking for jobs posted by your top employers—or, more likely, missing them entirely because you got burnt out checking so often—take 15 minutes to update your profiles and your notifications and invest in your future self!
